MONTEREY, Calif. – March 15, 2018 - The Monterey County Hospitality Association is holding its Annual Dinner Celebration and Awards on Friday, March 23rd, 2018 at the newly renovated Monterey Conference Center at 6:00PM. Tickets are available for $175.

The evening program will include commendations from Congress, State Senators and Assembly members and other dignitaries as members of the MCHA recognize an esteemed peer with the prestigious "Hospitality Professional of the Year" Award.

This year's recipient is Chris Shake, CEO, Shake Enterprises.

Mr. Shake is a lifelong Monterey restaurateur and philanthropist beginning at the age of 13 when he left school to work entirely in the family business known as Old Fisherman’s Grotto. He trained in all aspects starting as a dishwasher and worked his way up to CEO.  In addition to Old Fisherman’s Grotto, he also co-owns The Fish Hopper Restaurant, Scales Seafood and Steaks and the Fish Hopper restaurant in Kona Hawaii with his brother Sabu Jr.  He is the owner of Pirates Cove Gift Shop and Kocomo’s both on Fisherman’s’ Wharf and Austino’s on Cannery Row.

Mr. Shake has served on many boards as an officer including the Monterey Chamber of Commerce, the Monterey County Restaurant Association, CA State Restaurant Association, Fisherman’s Wharf Association and the La Merienda’s BBQ committee.  Mr. Shake was inducted into the CA Restaurant Association Hall of Fame in 2004 and received the “Others Award” from the Salvation Army Monterey Peninsula Corps; the highest national award given to a person from their organization and in 2012 was inducted into the “Seafood Heroes” Cooking for Solutions by the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  In 2014 he was selected by the Monterey Chamber as the 2014 Citizen of the Year.  Mr. Shake has served as a volunteer on many local fundraisers, most notably the fundraisers he and his brother Sabu Jr. have hosted for the Salvation Army that have raised $3,500,000 to date.  He also supports education in the hospitality field and supports many community programs such as local sports, music, art, etc.    His restaurants have won numerous awards and accolades under his leadership.

In addition, we will be honoring Pierre Bain, owner of Fandango Restaurant, with a Lifetime Achievement Award from MCHA, which recognizes and promotes individuals who have made a significant contribution to Monterey County’s hospitality and tourism industry.  Mr. Bain will be honored for his lifetime commitment to excellence in hospitality beginning in his homeland of France, working and learning English in Bermuda before arriving in San Francisco and working for the celebrated restaurant Les Etoiles on Nob Hill.  There he had a fortuitous meeting with Aime Michaud, the President of Del Monte Property soon to the Pebble Beach Company.  After an invitation to visit Pebble Beach by Mr. Michaud, he fell in love with the area, and agreed to stay on for six months to open the famed Club XIX Restaurant and ended up staying 20 years!  In the late 1980’s, with the help of partners, he purchased Fandango where he and his wife Marietta have greeted thousands of guests like family for the past 32 years.

We are proud to honor both recipients for these well-deserved awards.
